A Tale Within a Tale by Ahmet Ümit, first published in 1995 and now in its seventy-second edition, is a collection of oral and folk stories the author heard from his mother and skillfully rewrote. The book opens with the tale of a kind and benevolent king whose greatest flaw is his obsession with praise, expecting everyone to glorify him. Many flatterers take advantage of this, but one person grows frustrated and seeks a solution. Ahmet Ümit, one of Turkey’s most widely read contemporary authors, is best known for his crime and detective novels; his 2012 bestseller The Executioner’s Sultan was Turkey’s top-selling story. This edition, includes 136 pages and preserves the charm of traditional storytelling for modern readers.
