Al-Talyani tells the story of Abdel Nasser Al-Talyani, a passionate political activist and university student in Tunisia. Due to his European-like appearance, he is nicknamed "Al-Talyani" (the Italian). The novel explores his life against the backdrop of Tunisia’s political and social changes, spanning from the regime of Habib Bourguiba to the Tunisian Revolution of 2011. It delves into both his personal and political life, highlighting the larger political shifts in Tunisia and the identity crises faced by many intellectuals and political activists during this period. One of the central themes of the book is the complexity of human relationships and the impact of politics on personal lives. Abdel Nasser and his friends symbolize a generation of young Tunisians caught between competing ideas during the country's political transition.
