"An Elephant in the Garden" by Michael Morpurgo is a poignant historical novel set during the final months of World War II. Inspired by a true story, it follows Lizzie, a young girl living in Dresden, Germany, whose mother works at the local zoo. When the zoo director orders the execution of dangerous animals to prevent them from escaping during air raids, Lizzie's mother secretly brings home Marlene, a young elephant, to protect her. As Allied bombings devastate the city, Lizzie and her family embark on a perilous journey to escape the war, with Marlene accompanying them. The narrative unfolds as Lizzie recounts her experiences to a young boy named Karl, blending past and present to highlight themes of survival, compassion, and the enduring bond between humans and animals. Morpurgo's storytelling, complemented by Michael Foreman's illustrations, offers a heartfelt exploration of hope amidst the horrors of war.
