The Funeral Party by Lyudmila Ulitskaya is set in August 1991 in a sparse New York apartment, where Alek, a dying Russian émigré painter, lies surrounded by friends and disciples who cannot let go of him. As television broadcasts tanks in Moscow and Boris Yeltsin appears to project a new image of the Soviet Union, Alek’s circle wrestles with memory, attachment, and the struggle to continue their lives. Ulitskaya vividly captures the émigré experience, blending personal grief, moral reflection, and historical upheaval, showing how exile, politics, and intimate human bonds intersect in moments of crisis and transition.
